The Problem is not Our Laws

Last week, a terrible tragedy happened. More than a dozen people were senselessly gunned down in a Colorado movie theater by an armed assailant.

This is truly a tragic event, and I wish we could leave it as that: A tragedy—not something political that one side or another uses to further an agenda. But I am bothered by the mix of reactions I see. Look online at Twitter, Facebook, the blogosphere, and elsewhere, and you will see the automatic response of many is that there must be something wrong with our laws that has led to this. Either we do not have enough gun laws to stop men like this one; or we have too many, thereby preventing moviegoers from being adequately armed to protect themselves; or we inadequately evaluate the mental health of Americans; or we have focused too much attention on preventing foreign terrorism instead of preventing crime here at home.

I find all of these responses, frankly, shortsighted.

Alcohol in a Family Theme Park

Yesterday, the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board decided to up the number of liquor permits at Magic Springs theme park to eight, total. This means that Magic Springs can now sell alcohol at eight different locations around the park.

This is easily one of the weirdest issues we’ve had to deal with in recent months. Here you have a family theme park that already sells a good bit of alcohol, but it wants to sell even more.

Senator Pryor Helps Kill Blunt Amendment

A bill known as “the Blunt Amendment” would have helped protect people’s religious liberties in the face of the HHS mandate requiring they purchase contraception coverage under Obamacare. Yesterday, Arkansas’ Senator Mark Pryor voted to kill the amendment.

I’m sure Senator Pryor is friends with some very devout Catholics. Senator Pryor and I have both sent sons to the same Catholic high school in Little Rock. I wonder what Father Tribou, Little Rock Catholic High School’s legendary school principal, would have to say, were he alive to learn the father of one of his students, a U.S. Senator, voted against something intended to protect religious liberty; given the fact that Father Tribou often stated his opinion very frankly to President Clinton, I’m sure he would want to speak with Senator Pryor about this matter.

Please call Senator Pryor’s office and express your concern over his unwillingness to stand up for Americans’ religious liberties. His office phone numbers are (501) 324-6336 (Little Rock) and (202) 224-2353 (Washington, D.C.).

Thank Senator Boozman

When you’re done talking to Senator Pryor, you can also call and thank Senator John Boozman for supporting the Blunt Amendment in yesterday’s vote. His phone numbers are (501) 372-7153 and (202) 224-4843.
