All gifts to Family Council are tax-deductible under IRS Code 501(c)(3)
Below is our understanding of how some donors may be able to maximize their tax benefits when giving to Family Council. This information is not intended to be tax advice or legal counsel. Consult your tax professional, an attorney, the Internal Revenue Service, or other qualified source for official tax information for guidance when making a donation.
Appreciated Stock
Our brokerage accounts with Charles Schwab, Merrill Lynch, Raymond James, or Stephens Inc. can handle your gift of stock
or other securities. A gift of an appreciated asset, often common stock or mutual fund shares, is a way to donate to a charitable
organization and receive tax benefits based on the value of the asset(s). Gifts of appreciated stock or securities may
result in less taxes for donors than equivalent gifts made in cash. By donating the stock, the charity receives a larger gift than
it would receive if the investor first sold the stock and then donated the proceeds after deducting the capital gains taxes.
The investor may receive a greater tax deduction by giving the stock directly to the charity and avoiding the capital gains tax.
Land, Houses, or Buildings
We will need to review each piece of property and its unique circumstances to determine the suitability of the property as a gift. An acceptable piece of property is one that can be readily sold. There are many ways to donate property. By donating property you may be able to avoid capital gains and there may be a charitable income tax-deduction that could lower your income tax. Consult your tax professional for more information.
Automobiles, Boats, Office Furniture, Electronic Equipment, or Other Property
Tangible personal property, such as automobiles, boats, art, jewelry, coin collections, and household furnishings can be donated and, under most circumstances, they are tax-deductible for the donor. These items can sometimes be put to use by the organization or the organization may decide to sell the donated items. Gifts such as these are reviewed by Family Council on a case-by-case basis.
