Ten Reasons to De-Fund Planned Parenthood

Our friends at Alliance Defending Freedom have put together a list of ten reasons the government should stop funding Planned Parenthood. They are:

  1. Planned Parenthood engages in the sale of body parts harvested from aborted babies.
  2. Failing to report sexual abuse of young girls.
  3. Failing to provide women with proper care.
  4. Promoting risky sexual behavior in children.
  5. Misusing taxpayer funds.
  6. Killing children in the womb.
  7. Possibly utilizing illegal abortion methods.
  8. Disregarding the safety of women and children.
  9. Failing to uphold safe health standards.
  10. Using abortion to fund extravagances.

Trump Administration Announces Expansion of Pro-Life “Mexico City Policy”

Sec. of State Rex Tillerson

This week the Trump Administration’s Department of State announced an expansion of the pro-life “Mexico City Policy.”

The Mexico City Policy was created by President Reagan in 1984. It is a good policy that prevents American tax dollars from being used to subsidize abortions or abortion counseling overseas. It generally prevents federal family planning funds from going to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) who perform abortions or abortion counseling.

On Monday the Department of State announced its “Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance” program. This new program will expand the Mexico City policy to include other forms of government funding besides family planning funding–such as funding for HIV/AIDS relief, malaria, and maternal and child health.

Under the expanded policy, public funding for these global health programs will not go to NGOs who perform abortions or abortion counseling.

Ultimately this means federal funds will go to relief organizations who agree not to do abortions or abortion counseling instead of going to abortion providers like International Planned Parenthood Federation.

Many of the details of the new policy remain to be seen, but you can read a general overview of it on the Department of State’s website.

Family Council Signs Letter Urging Congress to De-Fund Planned Parenthood

Family Council has always opposed abortion and has always believed that public funds should never be used to pay for abortion or subsidize abortion providers.

This week we joined other pro-life organizations in signing a letter urging Congress to redirect public funding from Planned Parenthood–the nation’s largest abortion provider–to other clinics and organizations that do not perform abortions.

The letter reads in part,

It is time for Congress to re-direct funds away from Planned Parenthood. Instead, fund community health centers, which outnumber Planned Parenthood facilities by at least 20 to one and offer a full range of primary health care, unlike Planned Parenthood.

Others who signed the letter include Tony Perkins of Family Research Council; Paul Weber of Family Policy Alliance; Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests for Life; and many others.
