This morning, the Arkansas House of Representatives began orientation—an event lasting most of the week designed to acquaint newly-elected members with how the House functions.

Today was primarily ceremonial. Outgoing Speaker of the House Robbie Wills officially passed his gavel to his successor, Robert Moore, a Democrat from Arkansas City representing District 12. Moore will now serve as Speaker going into January’s legislative session and for at least the next two years.

Aside from the change in Speaker, House Parliamentarian Tim Massanelli—a respected figure at the Capitol for many years—spoke to the new members, giving them suggestions on how to go about their business, sharing information about the legislative process, and cracking light-hearted jokes all along the way. You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone at the Capitol with more institutional knowledge than Mr. Massanelli.

Tomorrow, the House will be conducting mock committee meetings at 1:30 and 3 p.m, and on Wednesday, they’ll hold a mock House session at 9 a.m. This would be a great opportunity for you to visit the Capitol, meet your state representatives, and learn more about the legislative process.
