Think euthanasia is something of a myth? Think again.

In the Netherlands, where euthanasia is on the rise, a woman in her eighties was euthanized over her macular degeneration.

According to a recent article, the woman experienced depression at the decline of her sight and hearing. Because, she reasoned, her quality of life was being impaired by these losses, she opted to have her life ended.

It’s understandable that the loss of sight and hearing would be distressing, but history tells us a handicapped person–even one severely handicapped–can lead an excellent life; if you don’t believe me, read a little about Helen Keller’s life story.

Rather than try to counsel this woman and help her through her depression, doctors in the Netherlands simply complied with her request to be euthanized.

One would think doctors would feel the need to help a suicidal person (essentially that’s what this woman was–suicidal) overcome their troubles. Instead, of helping her improve her quality of life, these doctors decided to help her end her life altogether.
