Arkansas Lottery: Revenue, Scholarships Decline in 2013

The Arkansas Lottery’s fiscal year just ended for 2013, and the numbers are in. Altogether, the Arkansas Lottery reports it “generated” $89.9 million for college scholarships. That’s a hefty number. Want to know some other hefty numbers, though?

  • $10.1 million. That’s how much the lottery fell short of $100 million. Lottery proponents promised the people of Arkansas $100 million a year for college students. The lottery has fallen short of that goal by millions of dollars every single year. (more…)

The “Brave” Choice

The following blog post is by Family Council staff member Christa Adams.

On July 7th the New York Times published an op-ed by Beth Matusoff Merfish in which she told the story of her family’s fight for “reproductive freedom” as well as her mother’s abortion. In the article Beth describes her mother’s decision to get an abortion when she was 20 as “brave” and “courageous.” She tells how proud she is of her mother for making the “freeing” decision to abort her first child.

Arkansas Economic Director Pushes for Same-Sex Marriage

This week, Grant Tennille, Arkansas’ Economic Development Commission Director, was at the Capitol trying to overturn Arkansas’ constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

What does same-sex marriage have to do with the Arkansas economy? Tennille said he thinks Arkansas could be a “leader” on the issue in the South by attracting same-sex couples as well as high-skilled jobs.

When pressed by a reporter, however, Tennille admitted he had no evidence to back up his claim. Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe issued a statement saying he did not agree with Tennille’s views on same-sex marriage.

Tennille’s economic “argument” is the latest reason offered by homosexual activists for legalizing same-sex marriage. Put simply, they’re saying that affirming homosexuality is good for the economy.

An excellent opinion editorial appeared on the website for Forbes Magazine on July 4th. In it, Jerry Bowyer disagrees with the position held by Tennille. Here are his main points:
