Mennonite Business Owners Challenge Obamacare Mandate

Conestoga, a family-owned cabinetmaking business whose founders are Mennonite, is challenging Obamacare’s abortion-pill mandate requiring businesses to buy insurance policies that include objectionable facets like abortion-inducing drugs and sterilization. The mandate forces Conestoga, Hobby Lobby, and other businesses with religious owners or founders to pay for things contrary to their deeply-held religious convictions.

From ADF: Obama Administration Retreats on Abortion Pill Mandate

According to a press release from Alliance Defending Freedom, a federal appellate court has dropped an appeal by the Obama administration at the administration’s own request.

The appeal was in response to a preliminary injunction issued against the administration’s contraception mandate as it applies to Bible-publishing company Tyndale House. Under Obamacare’s rules and regulations, Tyndale must provide its employees with health insurance that covers contraception and abortion-inducing drugs; the company does not qualify for a religious exemption under Obamacare.

Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys representing Tyndale House Publishers say the administration is apparently nervous about trying to defend its position that a Bible publisher is not religious enough for a religious exemption to the mandate.

This marks another major victory in the legal battles over rights of conscience.

7th Circuit Puts Brakes on Abortion Pill Mandate for Family-Run Co.

From Alliance Defending Freedom:

“The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit issued a preliminary injunction Wednesday that blocks enforcement of the Obama administration’s abortion pill mandate against family-run Grote Industries, an Indiana-based vehicle lighting manufacturer that filed suit in October of last year.”

This is the latest setback for the HHS contraception mandate. According to ADF’s website, the Obama Administration is losing 10-4 in court on this issue.
