On Friday, we told you about an effort underway by a Texas businessman to amend the Arkansas Constitution to allow him to open casinos in seven Arkansas counties. As we said then, Family Council opposes that amendment; casinos add social and economic stress to families and communities. Today, I want to briefly outline 5 ways in which expanding Arkansas’ casinos is a bad idea.
In November of 2008, Arkansans voted to institute annual legislative sessions—meaning that, henceforth, the legislature would go from meeting every other year to every year. In less than a month, we’re going to see the results of that vote.
House leaders, the White House, and Blue Dog Democrats reached a deal on the health care bill yesterday. Over the next day or two, the House Energy and Commerce Committee will markup the bill and most likely pass it out by end of day tomorrow. The good news: Even when it reaches the House floor, there will be no vote until the fall. That bides all of us time to build an even stronger opposition, because the bill is still not any good–despite input from the so-called “fiscally conservative” Blue Dogs.
