The Hopeless World of “13 Reasons Why”

Our friends at the Colson Center for Christian Worldview have published an excellent commentary on the Netflix original series “13 Reasons Why.”

Based on the novel Thirteen Reasons Why, the series follows a group of high school students in the wake of a classmate’s suicide.

John Stonestreet writes,

If you’re a parent, chances are you’ve heard about the series. If you’re a parent in a place like Colorado Springs, where literally dozens of teenagers have committed suicide in recent years, you’re probably asking yourself whether the show will only make a bad situation worse. . . .

The National Association of School Psychologists agrees, having issued the following statement: “We do not recommend that vulnerable youth, especially those who have any degree of suicidal ideation, watch this series. Its powerful storytelling may lead impressionable viewers to romanticize the choices made by the characters and/or develop revenge fantasies.”

Parents, we need to understand the impact that shows like this can have on our teens. And ultimately, we need to show our children what love really means—and where our hope in life truly lies.

We want to build a culture that values and protects human life. That includes opposing efforts to normalize or promote suicide.

Pregnancy Resource Center Hosting Diaper Drive

Caring Hearts Pregnancy Center announced Monday that it has partnered with the North Little Rock Fire Department for its 2017 Diaper Drive.

The Diaper Drive began on Mother’s Day (May 14) and will continue through Father’s Day (June 18), 2017. Donations of all diaper sizes will be accepted at all North Little Rock Fire Stations. The center is in most need of diaper sizes three, four, five and six.

These are the 11 North Little Rock Fire stations accepting donations:

  • Station 2, 3700 E. Broadway St.
  • Station 3, 1500 Shaer St.
  • Station 4, 8723 Maumelle Blvd.
  • Station 5, 3417 Magnolia St.

Pregnancy resource centers provide support for young women with unplanned pregnancies. They offer vital resources and empower women to choose an alternative to abortion. They offer pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, adoption information, and many other valuable services.

Trump Administration Announces Expansion of Pro-Life “Mexico City Policy”

This week the Trump Administration’s Department of State announced an expansion of the pro-life “Mexico City Policy.”

The Mexico City Policy was created by President Reagan in 1984. It is a good policy that prevents American tax dollars from being used to subsidize abortions or abortion counseling overseas. It generally prevents federal family planning funds from going to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) who perform abortions or abortion counseling.

On Monday the Department of State announced its “Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance” program. This new program will expand the Mexico City policy to include other forms of government funding besides family planning funding–such as funding for HIV/AIDS relief, malaria, and maternal and child health.

Under the expanded policy, public funding for these global health programs will not go to NGOs who perform abortions or abortion counseling.

Ultimately this means federal funds will go to relief organizations who agree not to do abortions or abortion counseling instead of going to abortion providers like International Planned Parenthood Federation.

Many of the details of the new policy remain to be seen, but you can read a general overview of it on the Department of State’s website.
