On Monday we told you about the U.S. Supreme Court’s bad ruling in the Whole Woman’s Health case. The ruling undermines states’ ability to pass legitimate regulations concerning abortion.

John Stonestreet at the Colson Center for Christian Worldview released an excellent commentary on the ruling yesterday, saying,

“First, let’s remember this is only one front in a continuing struggle that is making progress. The current abortion rate is lower than it’s been since before Roe was decided in 1973. And even without laws like the Texas one in place, pregnancy care centers outnumber abortion clinics by as much as three-to-one.

“So while the decision is indeed a setback, it does not change the brilliant day-out-and-day-in work of so much of the pro-life movement. Limits of what can be done legislatively will continue to be decided on a case-by-case basis, and we’ll continue to pray them on. But remember: the goal is not merely to make abortion illegal. We want abortion to be unthinkable.

“Which leaves us with the hard work of continuing to create a culture of life. For those of you hard at work, I can’t thank you enough for your faithfulness.”

Court Ruling on Texas Abortion Law Could Affect Arkansas

On Monday the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its Whole Woman’s Health decision regarding abortion laws in Texas. The court effectively struck Texas laws requiring doctors performing abortions to have admitting privileges at a local hospital and requiring abortion clinics to meet the same standards as ambulatory surgical centers.

Family Council President Jerry Cox released a statement saying, “Contrary to what some are saying, this is not a major victory for abortion. This is a mild setback for the pro-life movement. It in no way diminishes the victories we have had, and it likely will not have much impact on legislation that is filed in Arkansas when the legislature convenes in 2017. While the court’s decision regarding admitting privileges may prevent lawmakers from reintroducing similar legislation in Arkansas, there are at least a dozen more improvements that need to be made to Arkansas’ existing pro-life laws.

“For example, we need to be certain the Health Department is doing the best job possible inspecting abortion facilities, and we need to be certain that the results of those inspections are made public to ensure clinics operate as responsibly as possible. We also need to be certain abortion providers adequately inform women regarding abortion’s risks and alternatives. And the State of Arkansas needs to do all it can do to help women with unplanned pregnancies so that their children can be adopted or cared for rather than aborted.”

Cox also said the pro-life movement is alive and well. “Gallup recently found half of American adults think abortion ought to be legal only under certain circumstances, and another nineteen percent think abortion ought to be illegal completely. Altogether, that’s sixty-nine percent of Americans who think abortion ought to be illegal in some or all circumstances. Last year alone the number of abortions in Arkansas dropped by over five hundred. This is living proof the pro-life movement is gaining ground.”

Cox also noted today’s court ruling undermines constitutional liberty. “In his dissent, Justice Clarence Thomas spoke the truth when he effectively said the Supreme Court is eroding the U.S. Constitution by saying a woman has a constitutional right to have someone take the life of her healthy, unborn child. The court keeps bending its own rules to churn out rulings like this one. When it does that, the U.S. Supreme Court is undermining the principles of our Constitution.”

Billboard Campaign Celebrates Fatherhood with Abortion Awareness Month

The following is a press release from our friends at Arkansas Right to Life and Black Americans for Life.

June is “Abortion Awareness Month” in the African-American community and is being observed by the Arkansas chapter of Black Americans for Life, an outreach of Arkansas Right to Life. The group is sponsoring a billboard campaign that celebrates fatherhood and Abortion Awareness Month with the positive message that “Fatherhood Begins in the Womb.” The artwork was produced by Ryan Bomberger of the Radiance Foundation and creator of TooManyAborted.com.

The billboard campaign will feature two digital boards in Little Rock, located at 12th and University Avenue and Baseline Road at I-30, and posters on E. Harding in Pine Bluff and on E. Broadway in North Little Rock.

“Abortion disproportionately affects black women more than any other group. In 2014 approximately the same number of white and black unborn babies were killed by legal abortion every month in Arkansas, even though Blacks account for 15% of the population compared to 77% white. Most blacks should find this shocking. Unfortunately, many of us still do not even know,” stated Princella Smith, member of BAL. “It is disturbing that while the total number of abortions decline, the number of black abortions are increasing.”

The Arkansas chapter of Black Americans for Life works to expose the history of racism and eugenics that defined the birth control movement and legalized abortion, which resulted in the organization now known as Planned Parenthood. TooManyAborted.com educates the public about abortion’s impact on the black community via accurate and documented statistics, historical perspectives, thought-provoking videos, and personal testimonies.
