Governor Signs Good Pro-Life Bill into Law

The following press release is from our friends at Americans United for Life.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (04-7-15) — Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson’s signing of HB 1578, “The Women’s Right to Know Regarding Abortion” Act, made his state the second to expand Informed Consent requirements to include information that chemical abortion may be reversed, if a woman acts in time. Based on model legislation from Americans United for Life, Arkansas joins 31 other states in trusting women with more complete medical information about abortion and becomes the second state to include information on the impact of life-ending drugs on a woman’s body.

“Already more than 80 babies have been born, following the chemical abortion reversal process,” said AUL President and CEO Dr. Charmaine Yoest. “No medical reason exists to deny mothers the opportunity to choose life by sharing with them all their options.”

Legislators Commend Pregnancy Resource Centers

Yesterday the Arkansas Senate passed a resolution commending Arkansas’ pregnancy resource centers.

These centers provide support for young women with unplanned pregnancies. They offer vital resources and empower women to choose an alternative to abortion.

S.R. 24 by Senator Missy Irvin was adopted by the Arkansas Senate recognizing “the importance of pregnancy resource centers in Arkansas.” The resolution mirrors H.R. 1019, by Rep. Mary Benltey, which the Arkansas House of Representatives passed earlier this month.

House and Senate resolutions do not change state law, but they are a way legislators can make a public, pro-life declaration.

Pro-Life Parental-Involvement Bill Goes to Governor

Late yesterday afternoon the Arkansas Senate passed pro-life bill H.B. 1424.

This good bill strengthens Arkansas’ parental involvement laws concerning minors who seek an abortion.

Right now, Arkansas law requires abortion-providers to obtain parental-consent before performing an abortion on a minor; however, the law does not adequately ensure the person signing the parental-consent form is a parent.

H.B. 1424 inserts additional provisions into the law that will help verify the identity of the person signing the parental-consent form. This will help protect minors from exploitation by adults posing as their parents or legal guardians. It will also better ensure parents or legal guardians are involved when a young girl is seeking an abortion.

Parents have a vested interest in the health and safety of their children, and we believe when parents are involved, they are more likely to help their daughter understand abortion, its risks, and its alternatives–potentially saving the lives of unborn children.

The bill passed the Arkansas Senate, with 24 senators voting for it; 1 senator voting against it; and 9 senators not voting. It now goes to Governor Hutchinson to be signed into law.
