Authorities Raid Jefferson Co. Gambling Houses

In Family Council’s September update letter, we highlighted the proliferation of illegal gambling houses in Arkansas.

With the exception of the state lottery and the casinos and racetracks in Hot Springs and West Memphis, Arkansas law generally prohibits gambling.

However, we are hearing more reports of illegal gambling houses opening in some parts of Arkansas.

This week authorities in Jefferson County raided two suspected gambling houses–and they indicated other raids could happen in the future.

From what we have gleaned so far, one of these gambling houses appears to have been located in or near an old gas station; the other appears to have been located in a former or current bar or liquor store.

How Scripture Opposes Racism

Our friends at the Colson Center for Christian Worldview have released a brief commentary citing the biblical case against racism.

Eric Metaxas writes,

God’s unshakeable and irresistible goal is for people of every tongue, tribe, and nation to worship His Son, Jesus Christ. Revelation 7:9 says, “After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands.”

That verse alone ought to be the death knell of racism! God is glorified when people of all races worship His Son. It is a picture of the coming heavenly kingdom that we can glimpse right now.

A.G. Appeals to Eighth Circuit in Support of Pro-Life Laws

Last week, Attorney General Leslie Rutledge’s office filed a formal notice that it will appeal U.S. District Judge Kristine Baker’s decision to block the state from enforcing four good, pro-life laws.

This will put the four pro-life laws before the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.

The Eighth Circuit has recently overturned two of Judge Baker’s past decisions against other pro-life laws and policies.

In 2015 the Arkansas Legislature passed a law requiring abortion clinics performing chemical abortions to contract with a physician who has admitting privileges at a hospital to handle complications from the abortion. In 2016, Judge Baker blocked that law from being enforced.

Last July, a three-judge panel at the Eighth Circuit overturned Judge Baker’s decision, paving the way for this good law to be enforced in Arkansas.

In 2015, Governor Hutchinson directed the state to cut Medicaid funds from Planned Parenthood. Following a lawsuit, Judge Baker ruled Arkansas must continue giving Medicaid money to the abortion provider.

However, on August 16 another three-judge panel at the Eighth Circuit overturned that decision as well.

Given the fact the Eighth Circuit has reversed two of Judge Baker’s rulings already, I believe there is a good possibility the Eighth Circuit will reverse her decision against these four pro-life laws as well.
