AR Girls State Votes to Pass Human Heartbeat Protection Act

This past week some of the brightest high school students in Arkansas participated in the 2013 Arkansas Girls State program.

These young ladies learned about government by being elected to serve as officials carrying out the duties of elected offices at the Arkansas State Capitol.

One of the most contentious issues this past legislative session was the passage of the Human Heartbeat Protection Act, making abortion past the 12th week of pregnancy illegal in the State of Arkansas if a fetal heartbeat is detected. The all-female legislature at GirlsState took on and debated this issue themselves last week. After all was said and done, the Arkansas Girls State House of Representatives decided to pass the Human Heartbeat Protection Act by a vote of 63-25.

With the actual passage of this law a few months ago there was a lot of talk about a so-called “War on Women.” However, if the debate and results of the 2013 Arkansas Girls State is any indication of that “war,” then the pro-choice movement might want to re-evaluate where the current generation stands in Arkansas and take a look at what that future generation voted to stand for last week.

Arkansans have time and time again voted for and stood tall in the pro-life movement, and the next generation seems ready to stand up again.

Congressmen Want to Regulate Crisis Pregnancy Centers

A bill filed in the U.S. House of Representatives responds to recent abortion scandals in an unexpected way: By regulating crisis pregnancy centers and other pro-life groups.

HR 2030 requires the Federal Trade Commission to promulgate rules regulating the speech of nonprofit, pro-life pregnancy resource centers.

The bill redefines “nonprofit” as a for-profit business by stating, “The Federal Trade Commission shall enforce this Act with respect to an organization that is not organized to carry on business for its own profit or that of its members as if such organization were a person over which the Commission has authority.” (emphasis added)

Alliance Defending Freedom has written a letter to Congress expressing concern over the bill’s ramifications for pro-life groups; similar legislation passed at the local level has attempted to force pregnancy resource centers to provide information dissuading women from utilizing their services, but has almost always been stricken in court as unconstitutional.

Scientists Reportedly Engage in Clone-and-Kill Research

Oregon-based researchers claim to have cloned human embryos for the purpose of killing them to obtain their embryonic stem cells.

Oregon Health & Science University  scientists published a paper in the online journal Cell reporting the use of cloning techniques to produce human embryos. Twenty-one of these embryos were developed until stem cells were present, after which the human embryos were killed and the stem cells harvested.

These human embryos were tiny, unborn children killed in the name of medical research. Embryonic stem cells have yet to produce any of their promised medical breakthroughs, while adult stem cells–obtained without any loss of life–have led to major medical advancements and do not involve this type of clone-and-kill research.
