China’s Population Drops by Nearly a Million

China is struggling to undo the damage of its former one-child policy. According to a recent report by China’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the country’s population dropped by 850,000 people in 2022. The last decline was due to the Great Famine of 1961. This one is primarily due to a significant drop in the birth rate, which is only expected to worsen.

According to one official, citizens have lost a “willingness to have babies” and are delaying “marriage and pregnancy.” There’s even been a decline in pre-menopausal women. All of these are marks of a culture whose people were forced to prioritize fears of overpopulation and conformity to the state over the natural order and gift of family.

Ideas, and the policies that flow from them, have consequences. Even if not immediately apparent, policies opposed to life will eventually have significant consequences over the course of time, not only for individuals but also for entire societies.

Will Doctors Be Held Accountable for Her Harm?

Eighteen-year-old Chloe Cole has filed a lawsuit against Kaiser Permanente, accusing them of medical malpractice in her so-called “gender transition.” At age 13, Cole was put on puberty blockers and then testosterone. Within three years, she underwent a double mastectomy.

Over the past decade, the medical community has treated cases of gender dysphoria differently than other mind/body disorders. Typically, such disorders are treated by helping the patient reconcile with his or her body. It is only in the case of gender dysphoria that doctors encourage and facilitate expensive chemical and surgical interventions in the name of “gender-affirming care.” Far from alleviating the dysphoria and related mental health problems, these interventions leave the root problems unaddressed. To follow this path with minors is an especially troubling form of social experimentation.

Similar lawsuits have been instrumental for creating a course correction elsewhere. Hopefully, Chloe’s case will lead to doctors being held accountable for the harms they have caused and to a course correction here in America as well.

The “Face of Assisted Death in Canada”

Since so-called Medical Aid in Dying was legalized in Canada, those with severe medical conditions have been increasingly in danger. Care is becoming harder to find, while the option to die is quick, cheap, and always available.

One woman recently told her story on Twitter,

I am the face of [assisted-death] in Canada. As a 42-year-old woman with a rare complication of lupus [and] iatrogenic injuries, I will only cost the “system”.  I want to live but can’t get the care I need [and] have been approved for MAiD.

This is what opponents of MAiD warned of all along. The so-called “right” to die with dignity quickly becomes a “duty” to die, as vulnerable people are crushed beneath economic, social, and medical pressures.

In fact, according to demographer Lyman Stone, “Canada euthanized more people last month than the sum total of every Canadian wartime casualty since 1946.” Increasingly, those most at risk are losing the ability to choose.
